Electrical safety standards

50Amped uses national and workplace electrical standards as the baseline for light electrical, HVAC-R connections, and EV charging conversations in East Tennessee. The inspector who signs the job — the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) — has the last word.

  • NFPA 70 — National Electrical Code (NEC)

    The U.S. standard for safe electrical installation. Tennessee’s statewide minimum is still the 2017 NEC with state amendments. Knoxville, Cleveland, and Chattanooga may adopt a newer cycle or extra rules. We confirm the local edition before quoting new circuits or EV gear.

  • GFCI — NEC 210.8

    Ground-fault protection for wet and outdoor locations: bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, unfinished basements, and many laundry/utility sinks. Test GFCI outlets monthly. A trip that will not reset is a stop — not a reset-and-hope.

  • AFCI — NEC 210.12

    Arc-fault protection for living areas (bedrooms, family rooms, hallways, and more, depending on the adopted cycle). AFCI breakers catch dangerous arcing that a regular breaker can miss. Tennessee amendments make some AFCI locations optional at the state minimum — the city inspector still decides.

  • EV charging — NEC Article 625

    Level 2 chargers are a continuous load. Circuit size, disconnect, and GFCI/receptacle rules depend on hardwired vs plug-in and the code year in force. Load calculation on the existing panel comes first so the charger does not starve the house.

  • OSHA & NFPA 70E

    Workplace electrical safety and arc-flash practice. 50Amped carries OSHA training for field work. Commercial jobs follow lockout, PPE, and equipment clearances — not homeowner shortcuts.

AT HOME

  • Warm, buzzing, or discolored outlets and switches — replace, do not paint over.
  • A breaker that trips immediately: unplug, do not keep resetting.
  • Extension cords are temporary. Permanent heat from a cord is a red flag.
  • Outdoor HVAC disconnects and EV chargers need a clear working space.
  • Sparking, burning smell, or a panel that feels hot: stop and call a qualified electrician or emergency services.
